The Garden Room Café is located in a small pretty village just East of Rotherham. Really easy access from junction 1 of the M18 and just a short drive from the South of Doncaster. The café say that their food is fresh, simple and homemade. They also should add superbly delicious to that.
The café was full to the brim, turning people away at lunchtime on a Tuesday, always a grand sign of a brilliant eatery. The interior is fresh, modern, clean and detail aplenty to keep your eyes occupied. The staff on entering the café were extremely attentive and without any prompt, informed of any food not available for the day, which was only the steak.
The menu is not sparse and has plenty of choice for meat-eaters or vegetarians. The dish chosen by myself was homemade fish fingers on chunky bread and homemade chips. The wait for the food was around twenty minutes, right about perfect for a chat with your table but not too long to make you starve.
The food was served so stylishly on a metal plate with a newspaper under some greaseproof (not today’s date I might add but close!) The fish fingers were clearly home-cooked as stated, fresh silky white cod, in beautifully crisp breadcrumbs. Chips should always be the way they were on this plate – hand-cut and delectable. A side of fresh homemade tartar was to die for, zingy but creamy to really compliment the fish.
Guests on my table shared a chocolate meringue cake and reported that this was rich but highly advisable to try when there on a visit. The portions are rather large though so not sure how many people make it to the dessert stage!
Drinks after the meal came in a timely fashion and were spot on. The Americano and cream is highly recommended, some real quality in the fresh coffee.
The café has a beautiful courtyard which looks super appealing to return to in the summer and the village is very attractive. The Garden Room is a real gem and one that almost insists you become a regular at.
