The Fox House at Longshaw, Sheffield is in the most beautiful of situations with aesthetically pleasing, countryside surroundings. Dating back to 1773, the history and rustic décor of the interior make for an enchanting setting. However, this is a chain pub (Vintage Inn) so does it live up to expectations?
Mothers Day was obviously a very busy day for the pub, having to pre book and pay deposits for a table. There were plenty of staff on for the day, which bucks the trend of the skeleton staff era we are living in, all were very attentive.
First course was calamari with a chilli and chipotle dip, which came out cold and had to go back, but this was done in a timely fashion and didn’t cause any disruption to the rest of the diners at our table. The calamari itself was perfect deep fried, not chewy like it sometimes can be. The dip that it came with was somewhat tasteless though, not much sign of any chilli in there!
Main course was the safe option of fish and chips which was absolutely divine. Really light, crispy batter and great healthy looking fish. Chips were ok, not the best but satisfactory. The portion sizes were ample and by the end of the main course, worries started about how we were going to complete the 3 courses.
Dessert was undeniably worth waiting for and squeezing it in was a feat worth fighting! Raspberry milkshake cheesecake with a side of clotted cream. Perfectly baked and a lovely sweet, tasty sauce to go with it, delectable.
The rest of our party were happy with their meal choices with no issues, some main dishes among the orders were a vegetarian goats cheese tart, steak and chips, and lamb two ways, all of which had a resounding yum!
The Mothers Day deal was a bargain. Three courses for £20.50. The service was good, radiant atmosphere and lovely food, highly recommended. Well done to The Fox House for a good meal on an exceptionally busy day.
